Types Of Level Switches

RTD PT-100

platinum resistance temperature detector (RTD) Pt100 is a device with a typical resistance of 100 Ω at 0°C (it is called Pt100). It changes resistance value as its temperature changes following a positive slope (resistance increases when temperature is increasing).

They have been used for many years to measure temperature in laboratory and industrial processes, and have developed a reputation for accuracy,repeatability, and stability. A RTD can typically measure temperatures up to 850 °C. The relationship between resistance and temperature is relatively linear as shown below for a sample 100 Ω.

Level Sensor

Wide spectrum of sensors is available in the market and commonly, they are classified based on the specific application of the sensor. Sensor used for measuring humidity is termed as humidity sensor, the one used for measurement of pressure is called pressure sensor, sensor used for measurement of displacement is called position sensor and so on though all of them may be using the similar sensing principle. In a similar fashion, the sensor used for measurement of fluid levels is called a level sensor.

Quite obvious from its name, level sensors are used to measure the level of the free-flowing substances. Such substances include liquids like water, oil, slurries, etc as well as solids in granular/powder form (solids which can flow). These substances tend to get settled in the container tanks due to gravity and maintain their level in rest state. Level sensors measure their level against a pre-set reference.


Multi Channel Data Logger

 A data logger is any device that can be used to store data. This includes many data acquisition devices such as plug-in boards or serial communication systems which use a computer as a real time data recording system. However, most instrument manufacturers consider a data logger a stand alone device that can read various types of electrical signals and store the data in internal memory for later download to a computer.
The advantage of data loggers is that they can operate independently of a computer, unlike many other types of data acquisition devices. Data loggers are available in various shapes and sizes. The range includes simple economical single channel fixed function loggers to more powerful programmable devices capable of handling hundreds of inputs.

A PID controller calculates an "error" value as the difference between a measured process variable and a desired set point. Level Controller

 Level sensors detect the level of substances that flow, including liquids, slurries, granular materials, and powders. Fluids and fluidized solids flow to become essentially level in their containers (or other physical boundaries) because of gravity whereas most bulk solids pile at an angle of repose to a peak. The substance to be measured can be inside a container or can be in its natural form (e.g., a river or a lake). The level measurement can be either continuous or point values. Continuous level sensors measure level within a specified range and determine the exact amount of substance in a certain place, while point-level sensors only indicate whether the substance is above or below the sensing point. Generally the latter detect levels that are excessively high or low.

Pneumatically Actuated Valve

A pneumatic actuator converts energy (typically in the form of compressed air) into mechanical motion. The motion can be rotary or linear, depending on the type of actuator. A Pneumatic actuator mainly consists of a piston, a cylinder, and valves or ports. The piston is covered by a diaphragm, or seal, which keeps the air in the upper portion of the cylinder, allowing air pressure to force the diaphragm downward, moving the piston underneath, which in turn moves the valve stem, which is linked to the internal parts of the actuator.

Control Valve

Control valves are valves used to control conditions such as flow, pressure, temperature, and liquid level by fully or partially opening or closing in response to signals received from controllers that compare a “set-point” to a “process variable” whose value is provided by sensors that monitor changes in such conditions.

The opening or closing of control valves is usually done automatically by electrical, hydraulic or pneumatic  actuators. Positioners are used to control the opening or closing of the actuator based on electric, or pneumatic signals. These control signals, traditionally based on 3-15 psi (0.2-0.1 bar), more common now are 4-20mA signals for industry, 0-10V for HVAC systems, and the introduction of “smart” systems, HART, Fieldbus Foundation, and Profibus being the more common protocols.

Electrical Panel

A control panel is a flat, often vertical, area where control or monitoring instruments are displayed. They are found in factories to monitor and control machines or production lines and places such as power plants, ships, aircraft and mainframe computers. Older control panels are most often equipped with push buttons and analog instruments, where as today in many cases touch screens are used for monitoring and control purposes.


A switched-mode power supply (switching-mode power supply, SMPS or switcher) is an electronic power supply that incorporates a switching regulator to convert electrical power efficiently. Like other power supplies, an SMPS transfers power from a source, like mains power, to a load, such as a personal computer, while converting voltage and current characteristics. Unlike a linear power supply, the pass transistor of a switching-mode supply continually switches between low-dissipation, full-on and full-off states, and spends very little time in the high dissipation transitions, which minimizes wasted energy. Ideally, a switched-mode power supply dissipates no power, Voltage regulation is achieved by varying the ration of on-to-off time. In contrast, a linear power supply regulates the output voltage by continually dissipating power in the pass transistor. The higher power conversion efficiency is an important advantages of a switched-mode power supply. 

Solenoid Valve

A solenoid valve is an electomechanically operated valve. The valve is controlled by an electric current through a solenoid: In the case of a two-port valve the flow is switched on or off, in the case of a three-port valve, the outflow is switched between the two outlet ports. Multiple solenoid valves can be placed together on a manifold.

Cleaning-In-Place (CIP) is system designed for automatic cleaning and disinfecting without major dis assembly and assembly work. Additionally, a well designed CIP system (employing double seat valve (block and bleed) technology and a bit of process integration) will enable you to clean one part of the plant while other areas continue to produce product. Furthermore, a modern CIP system will not only save money in terms of higher plant utilization but also due to significant savings in CIP liquid (by recycling cleaning solutions), water (the system is designed to use the optimum quantity of water)
